Mesa Verde National Park was established by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1906 to preserve the archeological heritage of the Ancestral Pueblo people who resided in the are for over 700 years from 600-1300 CE. To this day the park protects and reserves approximately 5,000 archeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. The first occupants of the Mesa Verde region, which spans from southeastern Utah to northwestern New Mexico, were nomadic Paleo-Indians who arrived in the area c.?9500 BC hey followed herds of big game and camped near rivers and streams, many of which dried up as the glaciers that once covered parts of the San Juan Mountains receded.
